*** Warning ***
Many general contractors and even handymen doing odd jobs will have a “contractors”, construction”, or “business” license. This does not entitle them to perform electrical or plumbing work in your home. The electric and plumbing trades require specialty licenses that are earned through testing after proof of specific years in the trade under the proper supervision plus on going education to maintain these licenses once they are acquired. If a contractor or handyman is not licensed to specifically do electric or plumbing work then they cannot personally do this work and more to the point they cannot have insurance to cover any of this work should they choose to do it for you. In such a circumstance the homeowner would assume ALL responsibility for any damages resulting from such illegally wired or equipment installed, irregardless of what such an individual may say. Homeowner insurance policies tend to have clauses that absolve them of the responsibility to pay for repairs resulting from such work.
I don't know how to stress this enough. If you allow a handyman to perform ANY electric work in your home you are mixing matches and gasoline (to put it mildly) . Homes have burned to the ground and lives have been lost due to seemly "simple" electric jobs performed by unqualified, unlicensed, and uninsured workers.
Unfortunately,
...... even an electrician that works for a company does not have independent liability insurance. So if they choose to do electric work "on the side" there is no insurance coverage for you and your home should they be injured while working for you or if they do "shoddy" work to compensate for not properly pricing the job or because they want to get off on time or perhaps they just don't have the experience level to work independent of a quality controlled enviroment. You, the homeowner assume all risk.
Often this kind of electrician will tell you, "whether I do this work for you through the company or I work for you on my own you receive the same work, there is no difference." The difference IS there is no protection for your family and home without contractor insurance, you are simply "rolling the dice" with the safety of your family and property.
